More strange creature sightings at Millerton Lake

The focus on Weird Fresno lately has been heavy on the haunted spots throughout the Central Valley, as they seem to be the most prolific. But I love a good creature sighting and when I received an e-mail the other night (while I was at Channel Road no less) about yet another creature sighting that occurred at Millerton Lake, I knew I had to share.

According to the person who e-mailed me, it was 1975 and he and his wife went on a camping trip up at Millerton Lake one weekday. He describes the lake as being very calm and the water was "smooth as glass". As he and his wife were enjoying the view they noticed a wake forming on the surface of the water. Suddenly a large head surfaces and then dives back down into the water quickly followed by the back of the creature (the witness said he didn't see a tail). As it completed it's dive it left a huge wake behind. He goes on to estimate that it was at least 30 feet in length and that the only way he could describe it was it appeared similar to the descriptions of the Loch Ness monster.

The next day as they were leaving the couple came across a gas station and decided to gas up. There he noticed a bulletin board with news clippings with telling about different sightings of the creature he saw the previous day.

Now I know I've reported on giant catfish sightings in the past, but the description of the wake seems similar to this story I wrote about back in March of 2010 where another witness saw a large mass swimming around leaving a big wake behind it. Could this be the same thing that was seen back in '76? And if so, what the hell is beneath the surface of Millerton Lake?

What was seen at Millerton was a River Otter. They can get quite large(3 feet plus with tail) I have observed them at the lake several times. Also at Don Pedro.

Moneys on the giant catfish!! Catfish have nearly unlimited growth. True; their are giant carps out swimming by the dam too or stripers. Must it be the lost town of Millerton or it's rumored old grave site: lost lake!!

I'm glad to find comments about a weird creature sighting in Lake Don Pedro, because as soon as I got home from a camping trip there ( back in the summer of 2006 ) I went on line to see if anyone else
reported it. At dusk, my friend and I saw a eel or snake shaped creature but with the girth of 70 or so inches in circumference and 10 ft long -I kid you not! My friend and I thought someone was playing a trick on us. Needless to say we were completely freaked out. We didn't seem to see what you all are describing. We were completely coherent. We were just moms watching our young kids wading in the water.

I remember watching the local news in Fresno sometime in the early Eighties. Sheriff's divers were looking for a body in Pine Flat Lake. The reporters interviewed one of the divers who said that something very large swam past him and brushed against him while he was down in the murky water. He said he would never dive in the lake again. My own feeling was that it was probably a very, very large catfish.

Yes. I herd the same story about the divers.. I'm 32 years old and I can remember hearing Big Catfish stories as a little girl. I have always been afraid of the lake, and always tell the stories I have herd. This Sunday we are going boating on the lake and I will keep my eyes open....

I have heard a scary ghost story about Lost Lake. My uncle was driving to the lake, not the river area, when he saw a woman on the side of the road. He stopped--she was in a wedding dress and obviously not of the living--he recalled to me.. He said that he tried to get the hell out of there but she jumped on the hood of his muscle car and left scratches from her nails on the window and on the hood..Supposedly a couple drowned in the lake on their wedding night...can you verify the drowning? My Uncle Richard was a man who wasn't afraid of anything or anyone, but this scared the shit out of him
